Benefits of EPDM Roofing Systems

EPDM is an exceptionally strong and resilient roofing system that can last 30 years or longer when installed and maintained correctly.

EPDMs or breather membranes can be used as an EPDM overlay for existing roofs, or to waterproof new builds, or new flat roofs.

If you’re in the market for a new facility roof or you just want to know what your options are – you might be interested in knowing that EPDM is among the best roofing choices for affordability, energy savings and for reducing your building’s carbon footprint.

13 Reasons to choose EPDM

  • Breather Membrane – EPDM rubber waterproofing systems allow the substrate underneath it to breath. These products are vapour permeable, meaning any existing moisture or dampness can escape, while the membrane retains its ability to remain fully waterproof against the elements.
  • Speed of Installation – A one piece roof system comes prefabricated from the factory, reducing the time and costs related to man hours during the installation process. This allows EPDM systems to be measured, fabricated and installed quicker than most other roofing products. EPDM breather membranes can also be used as an EPDM overlay, saving even more time and money on flat roof replacement projects.
  • Membrane Flexibility – EPDM rubber membrane is highly elastic and will accommodate excessive stretching and building movements without a problem!
  • Membrane Quality – EPDM roofing systems will not tear, crack or split! They can, in fact, stretch to > 400% without damage.
  • Efficient Installation – EPDM provides peace of mind in that it is made to measure in the workshop under ideal working conditions, with consistent quality control. This also makes EPDM ideal for lining lakes, reservoirs and ponds, requiring minimal seams in application
  • Proven Resistance to Aging – 50 year minimum proven life expectancy, as well as a 20-year guarantee for roofing and structural waterproofing works.
  • Installation Safety – with no flame torches or hot boilers being required to install EPDM rubber membrane, it is applied cold, therefore obviates the risk of fire, noxious gases to workers, premises and surrounds.
  • Fire Resistant – FR Grade; non-ballasted: AA Standard; ballasted: FAA
  • Extreme Temperatures – EPDM remains unaffected by extreme temperature variations having been exhaustively tested to withstand temperatures varying from -40 to 110 degrees Celsius.
  • Highly Puncture Resistant – the membrane is resistant to root penetration and is therefore ideal for roof gardens in addition to flat roof waterproofing. Some even exceed the German FLL tests for root penetration.
  • Environmentally Friendly – EPDM is the most environmentally friendly waterproofing product on the market, as it is recyclable, using less volatiles in its manufacture than most other products, coupled with its very low usage of global resources
  • Resistant to Atmospheric Pollutants – EPDM membranes are resistant to atmospheric pollutants such as acid rain and ultraviolet light.
  • Lightweight – with its rubber breather membrane putting negligible loads on roofs being refurbished, EPDM is one of the lightest waterproofing materials available and therefore ideal for overlay ‘wrapping’.

Carlisle's Systems Brochure For EPDM Laid Roofs

Choosing the appropriate membrane is only half of the roofing selection process. It is equally important to select the proper installation method. Much the same way that climatic conditions play a role in membrane selection, environmental factors such as wind and building height are important when choosing an installation method. Carlisle’s roof systems are installed using three quality methods, each with its own specific benefits depending on your building’s location and climate.  With 100 years' experience in residential and roofing waterproofing you cannot go wrong.
